 Right now my dear friend Daniella is visiting me from Miami. So I found it fitting to write about the story of my friend group, the creation of the sophomores (sophs) and seniors, and what we stand for as a group. The year was 2016 and it was my sophomore year of high school. My childhood best friend, Ella, and I just got introduced to the new girl at school named Emma who moved from North Carolina. Before reading "American like me" I was only familiar with author America Ferrera from watching her in movies and TV shows. When I started reading her book, I could immediately tell I would be able to resonate with her story. In her autobiographical memoir, she shared her difficulty with cultural identity and her feelings of isolation and embarrassment with her birth name. But the root of America's story is that although she faced these internal obstacles, it was all a part of her journey of discovering who she is and creating her own definition of an American.
